Visitor Information
As
part of the Isle of Wight Council Directorate of Education,
Branstone Farm Studies Centre was established in 1973
to give the younger child a rare opportunity to experience
life on a working farm. Although
primarily for Island children, the farm extends a warm
welcome to visiting schools throughout the country.
Each
guided tour lasts about two hours. During this time,
children are encouraged to hold the hens, pat the pigs
and stroke the sheep! Afternoon visitors are welcome
to view the cows being milked. During spring there are
orphan lambs to be bottle fed - the highlight of the
visit.
Amidst
the fun and excitement, children learn about animal
husbandary, farming techniques and conservation issues.
Valuable discussion and follow up work takes place in
the farm classroom using a variety of teaching styles
after the tour.
