Primary and Secondary - Teacher INSET sessions


Participants will gain an understanding of-
The countryside as a living and working environmentThe practicalities involved in taking children into the countrysideHow to find an appropriate site to visit
Personal qualities/professional characteristics developed-
Confidence in taking children out of school for experiential learningNetworking for support in environmental teachingAbility to return to school and enthuse, inform and involve other members of staff

Participants will gain skills in-

Linking curriculum to the countrysideDesigning complimentary activities for use in the classroom
or in the field

Course content and methodology

* the day will consist of a balance of practical tasks, discussion and presenter input* the workshops will demonstrate the links that can be made between outdoor land based experiences with the curriculum* the plenary session will involve pulling together ideas, contacts and local events to culminate in a planned visit
   

INSET sessions have been run at:

  • Lodge Dairy Farm, The Southwick Estate
  • Sparsholt College Farm, Winchester
  • Portsmouth Estates Farleigh Wallop

  • Met people who live and work on an estate
  • Received a free KS 2 Pack, The Lychford File (worth £35)
  • Got excited and enthused!
The typical programme was as follows:
9.15 Arrival, registration and coffee. Introduction to the day and Hampshire Country Learning.
9.30 Tour of farm and woodlands.
12.00 Brainstorm – meeting the needs of the National Curriculum on farm.
12.30 Lunch.
1.00 Workshops – looking at complimentary activities from The Lychford file and other resources and support materials, including packs from Farming and Countryside Education, The Soil Association and The National Trust. This session includes the viewing of useful website on disk.
2.30 Planning days out - Health and Safety and Risk Assessments. Estate open days. Bringing children to a farm.
3.00 Conclusions, evaluation.
3.30 Depart.
