Jim Green Memorial Competition a fun educational competition designed for Special Schools
(places limited)

Demonstrate your skills at Linkenholt Estate,
near Andover in summer 2006

Hampshire Country Learning, together with Linkenholt Estate, seeks to hold a “Fun Competition” that gives young people an understanding of our food supply from field to plate, together with aspects of farming today.

We hope to hold the competition yearly in June or July with different elements each year. All entrants will be awarded a certificate and the winners of each class will receive a prize. Entry is free and most “bits” for the competition will be provided. The following is our idea of how the Jim Green Memorial Competition will be this year, but your ideas will help us develop themes for years to come.

Time scales
Autumn 2005 Teachers attend a briefing at Linkenholt to learn the requirements for the competition.
From Jan / Feb 2006 Schools embark on their school based tasks e.g. growing potatoes
June / July 2006 Teams of 6 pupils from each school attend the Competition day at Linkenholt. School based exhibits are brought for judging
School Based Tasks (to be brought to Linkenholt for judging)
1. Grow a bucket of Potatoes (weight of all potatoes)
2. Make a rain gauge and record the daily rainfall (best gauge and chart)
3. Make a tractor from recycled materials (best model)
4. Design a ‘care for the countryside’ poster (best poster)

Farm Based Activity Day (at Linkenholt Estate)
Each of the teams will move round the following activities, which will be judged as they go along.

The day may start with a tour of the fields and woodland, showing the wheat etc growing; returning to the Pavilion/Farm Site for the activities.

1. Match “raw” products e.g. vegetables, fruit, seeds, plants, with packets and tins
2. Grind wheat into flour, make into bread and bake
3. Make potato print depicting a plant or flower
4. With identification guides correctly name 6 trees
Activities can be altered at autumn planning meeting.
To kick start your countryside work you may wish to make a visit to Linkenholt during the spring to see some of the following:
  Agricultural machinery
  Woodland
  Learn about pheasant rearing
Simply take a walk around part of the estate, taking photos as inspiration for future art or poetry.

Hampshire Country Learning is a charitable organisation that works in partnership with The Countryside Foundation for education. Our aim is to provide opportunities for all children to learn about food, farming and the countryside through free visits to farms and estates.
Hampshire Country Learning is keen to ensure that all children are given access to these visits.

We believe that learning in the outdoors enriches all areas of the curriculum
