Hampshire
Country Learning, together with Linkenholt Estate, seeks to hold
a “Fun Competition” that gives young people an understanding
of our food supply from field to plate, together with aspects
of farming today.
We hope to hold the competition
yearly in June or July with different elements each year. All
entrants will be awarded a certificate and the winners of each
class will receive a prize. Entry is free and most “bits”
for the competition will be provided. The following is our idea
of how the Jim Green Memorial Competition will be this year,
but your ideas will help us develop themes for years to come.

Teams of 6 pupils from each school attend
the Competition day at Linkenholt. School based exhibits are brought

Farm Based Activity
Day (at Linkenholt Estate)
Each of the teams will move round the following activities, which will
be judged as they go along.
The day may start with a tour of the fields
and woodland, showing the wheat etc growing; returning to the Pavilion/Farm
Site for the activities.

work you may wish to make a visit to Linkenholt during the spring
to see some of the following: |

Learn about pheasant rearing |

Simply take a walk around part of the
estate, taking photos as inspiration for future art or poetry. |

| Jo has many links to many
land based organisations that are producing some wonderful educational
materials. All schools entering this competition will receive a detailed
British Potato Council Teacher’s Pack, which gives lots of ideas
for linking potatoes to the curriculum. |

Linkenholt is
a 2000 acre estate owned by the Herbert and Peter Blagrave Charitable
Trust set in North West Hampshire where the Hampshire, Berkshire and Wiltshire
borders meet. The estate comprises numerous different enterprises: farming,
forestry, gamekeeping and camp site.

The Jim Green Memorial
Competition originated at The South of England Agricultural Show Society
where it annually enables youngsters with special needs to demonstrate
skills linked to the countryside. |
