Countryside Days for Schools (Estate Days)

  • 20th & 21st May Manydown near Basingstoke by kind agreement of the Oliver-Bellasis family. Here we ran three days, two consecutive days for KS2 children 7 – 11 year olds from Hook Junior and Bramley Primary Schools (367 children). We also ran a KS1 Day (25th May) for 60 4-7 year olds from Whitewater School, Rotherwick.

  • 7th June Beaulieu with grateful thanks to the Montague family, Alex Glanville Estate Manager and David Bridges of The Countryside Education Trust with whom we ran the day. 317 7 –11 year olds from the Southampton area enjoyed a wonderful sunny day learning about woodland crafts, pursuits and management.
  • 16th June Faccombe near Andover by kind agreement of Brigadier Landon and Estate Manager David Harbottle. 115 7 – 11 year olds explored the countryside learning about crops, animals and even a wind turbine
  • 24th June Rotherfield Park near Alton with great support from Sir James Scott, Farm Manager David Bowyer and Head Keeper Pete Rose. 213 7-11 year olds had a wonderful day learning about the activities that take place on the estate including finding out about the history of the main house from Sir James himself. We were pleased to have the company of Councillor Kenneth Graham (East Hampshire District Council) who took part readily and chatted with the children. Davina Tibbetts of Hampshire Fare taught the children how yoghurt and cream are made through a practical demonstration using Rotherfield milk.

  • 1st July Priors Hold & Lodge Farms on the Southwick Estate with tremendous support from Farm tenants Sally and Andrew Humphrey. 210 8 – 11 year olds from the Portsmouth area revelled in learning about dairying, bee keeping and Boarhunt Mill along with much more including a Police dog demonstration.
Science Fairs

These days are organised by the Education Business Partnerships of which there are 4 in Hampshire. The aim of the day is for different organisations to bring science to life for 7 – 11 year olds by showing them how science is used if different professions. I have been pleased to teach the children about food and farming through activities such as grinding wheat into flour and matching products to the right crops. Through attending such days at Alton, Andover, Beaulieu, Basingstoke and Marwell I have made contact with 35 schools across the county.

Working with teachers

An In-service training (INSET) day was held at Portsmouth Estates, Farleigh Wallop. Teachers learned how a visit to the countryside can enrich the curriculum. Teaching resources were displayed and a tour of the estate was conducted paying particular regard to bringing groups of children to visit.

Activities in schools

As the name of HCL is becoming known, schools have asked me to come in and work on particular topics related to food, farming and the countryside.

  • Longparish – Y5 & 6 bread making, grinding wheat, matching crops to products, wheat growth stages
  • Whitewater – whole school countryside activities grinding wheat, matching crops to products, exploring different wools, rumen investigation
  • St Marks (Southampton) – KS2 bread making, grinding wheat, matching crops to products, wheat growth stages
  • Selborne - HGCA Farmhouse Breakfast event. Staff from the local farm shop came to school and told the children all about rearing pigs and making sausages. The following week the class had breakfast at school trying different breads and cereals.
  • Ropley – whole school countryside activities grinding wheat, matching crops to products, exploring different wools, rumen investigation
Developing links between Applied Science GCSE teachers and farmers in several Hampshire secondary schools

Working with farmers

  • CEVAS (Countryside Educational Visits Accreditation Scheme) training farmers who wish to run educational visits.
  • Inviting local schools to launch
of Maize maze – Rowlands Castle
  • Dairy Barn Farm Shop Open Day providing activities for families to learn about the countryside
  • Laverstoke Park Open Day – promoting learning through the countryside
Hopes for the future
  • To work closely with other organisations complementing the work they do and developing a county (and beyond) outdoor learning team that schools can call on e.g. Hampshire Fare, CET, FACE, CFE Sparsholt Schools’ Centre and many more
  • To train farmers to be able to run single class visits themselves
  • To work with LEA advisors to match opportunities in the countryside with current thinking in schools
  • To run estate days at the existing venues, possibly going to 2 days at each.
  • To run estate days at the following new venues:
Linkenholt
Leckford
Farleigh Wallop
Laverstoke Park
Cholderton
Bereleigh
Herriard
Avington
Cadland Hursley

This would take us to 15 estate day venues

  • To run INSET days in conjunction with other initiatives e.g. Trailblazer, Healthy Schools
